Asahi Kasei says it has completed a new Hipore lithium-ion-battery separator coating line at its existing Celgard facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, moving a project first announced in 2023 toward commercial production. The company held a completion ceremony Aug. 20 and announced the milestone Aug. 26.1
Commercial production has not started yet. Asahi Kasei says the Charlotte line is scheduled to begin commercial output in the second half of fiscal 2026, a window that corresponds roughly to October 2026 through March 2027 because the company's fiscal 2026 ends in March 2027.12
The line also has a defined commercial path beyond commissioning. Toyota Tsusho America holds a preferential share of its Hipore production capacity under a capacity-rights agreement announced in July 2025, with coated separator supply from Charlotte scheduled to begin in mid-2027.3
That makes the Aug. 26 announcement more than another battery-factory plan. Charlotte has now moved from an investment decision to trial operation and completed equipment, while a portion of future capacity is already reserved for a North American automotive-battery supply chain.134
From a 2023 investment to completed equipment
A battery separator is the porous membrane between a lithium-ion cell's positive and negative electrodes. It allows lithium ions to move through the cell while keeping the electrodes physically apart. Asahi Kasei's Charlotte project adds wet-process Hipore coating capability inside the existing Celgard facility; the company's current public material does not establish Charlotte as an integrated Hipore base-film manufacturing site.15
Asahi Kasei first announced the broader coating expansion in October 2023. That program covered three locations — Charlotte; Hyuga, Japan; and Pyeongtaek, South Korea — with about ¥40 billion of investment and about 700 million square meters per year of added coating capacity across the three sites combined.5
Those figures are not Charlotte-only numbers. Asahi Kasei's current Charlotte announcement does not publish a standalone annual capacity or investment figure for the North Carolina line.15
By April 2026, the company said trial operation in Charlotte had begun the previous month and commercial production remained scheduled for the second half of fiscal 2026.4 The Aug. 20 completion ceremony is therefore another step in a sequence that now runs from the 2023 investment decision to March trial operation, August completion and a planned commercial-production ramp.154
Toyota Tsusho has preferential capacity rights
Asahi Kasei Battery Separator America and Toyota Tsusho America finalized their capacity-rights agreement in July 2025. The agreement gives Toyota Tsusho America preferential access to a portion of Asahi Kasei's Hipore production capacity, and the companies said Charlotte supply is scheduled to start in mid-2027.3
The agreement is explicitly aimed at a North American automotive lithium-ion-battery supply chain. But the public announcement does not identify the downstream cell manufacturer, battery plant or automaker that will ultimately use the separator.3
That distinction matters because Toyota Tsusho's involvement does not establish that the Charlotte material is destined for Toyota Motor vehicles. What is public is narrower: Toyota Tsusho America has preferential capacity rights and a planned mid-2027 supply start.3
Charlotte is moving sooner than Asahi Kasei's Canadian ramp
The Charlotte milestone also shows how Asahi Kasei is sequencing its North American separator buildout as EV-growth expectations have weakened.
In an April management briefing, Asahi Kasei said construction of its Canadian Hipore plant was progressing on schedule for completion in 2027. At the same time, the company said it would determine the plant's operating start based on market conditions and was assuming a delay of 1.5 to two years because growth in the North American EV market had slowed.4
Asahi Kasei also said it expected to supply the North American market from existing facilities in Japan and South Korea while the market develops, with full operation of the Canadian plant expected from 2030 onward.4 Those are company plans and forecasts, not achieved production milestones.
The Aug. 26 Charlotte release says construction of the Canadian separator facility is still progressing, but it does not provide a new commercial-start date.1
That leaves Charlotte as the nearer-term North American execution point. The coating line is complete, trial operation has already begun and commercial production is scheduled within the current fiscal year. The next proof points are actual commercial output, customer qualification and the planned mid-2027 Toyota Tsusho supply start — along with any Charlotte-specific capacity disclosure or updated operating date for the Canadian project.134
