Autonomy Is No Longer EV-Only — Its Showroom Now Lists Six Gas-Powered Fords

Autonomy is expanding beyond the EV-only vehicle-subscription offering it built its name around. The company announced September 9 that it is adding gas-powered vehicles, and its live showroom now displays 13 models: seven labeled electric and six labeled gas.¹²

The six gas models are all Fords: Mustang, Ranger, F-150, Bronco Sport, Escape and Explorer. Autonomy says the first gas phase is available in California and that the vehicles were supplied by Los Angeles-based Galpin Motors.¹

That is a real change in Autonomy's product mix, but it is not the same as Autonomy leaving EVs. Its current showroom still lists the Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, BMW i4, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV and Hyundai Ioniq 5 as electric options.² Autonomy also says EVs remain a key part of its business.¹

The subscription model is broadening, not disappearing

Autonomy is keeping the flexible subscription format while widening the kinds of vehicles available through it. The company's current site describes subscriptions as month-to-month after a 31-day minimum hold, with routine maintenance included.²

Galpin's current subscription page identifies Autonomy as its program partner. It says Autonomy owns the subscription vehicle and manages vehicle operations and service coordination on Galpin's behalf.³ The September 9 announcement says the new gas vehicles were supplied by Galpin; it does not establish a separate direct Ford Motor Company supply or partnership role for this launch.¹

The geography is also narrower than Autonomy's overall footprint. Autonomy says it operates in Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, New York, North Carolina and Washington, but its September 9 announcement establishes current gas availability specifically in California. The company says it plans to work with additional dealer partners to add gas-powered options in more markets.¹

Autonomy once framed subscriptions as an EV-adoption play

The move stands out because Autonomy previously made a much larger public commitment around EVs. In August 2022, the company announced a $1.2 billion order for 23,000 EVs across 45 models from 17 automakers, with an expected delivery timeline of six to 18 months.⁴

Those numbers describe the order and timeline Autonomy announced in 2022; they are not a current fleet count and do not establish how many of those vehicles were ultimately delivered, retained, sold, canceled or otherwise disposed of.⁴ The useful comparison is therefore strategic rather than arithmetic: a subscription platform that publicly positioned itself around expanding EV access now offers a mixed electric-and-gas catalog.¹²⁴

Autonomy frames the change as giving customers more vehicle choice.¹ Its September 9 announcement does not provide independent market data showing that a broader decline in U.S. EV demand caused the expansion, so the move should not be treated as evidence of an industry-wide demand verdict.¹
