Unifor Says 96.5% of CAMI Members Ratified GM Deal — but Production Is Still Unresolved

Update, Aug. 30, 2026: This article has been rewritten after Unifor announced the member-ratification result. The earlier version was published while approval of the proposed CAMI agreement was still pending.

Unifor says members covered by the GM CAMI agreement voted 96.5% in support of the new contract, resolving the member-approval condition that was still open when this article was first published earlier Aug. 30.¹²

The vote does not resolve what CAMI will build next. Unifor's ratification release still describes the Ingersoll, Ontario, plant as idled, says the majority of represented members remain on indefinite layoff, and says the union will continue pushing for production to return.¹

That leaves the former BrightDrop EV factory in a more settled labor position while its production future remains unresolved. Unifor says the ratified package also extends Income Maintenance Plan benefits for eligible laid-off CAMI members through May 2028.¹

Ratification changes the status, not the product question

Unifor's detailed CAMI bargaining report says GM was unwilling to make a product commitment for the plant in this bargaining round and would continue seeking opportunities for the facility.³ Ratification means Unifor has announced that members approved the agreement; it does not mean the newsroom has inspected a separately published signed final CAMI agreement or a GM-hosted commitment letter reproducing every detailed term in the union's report.¹³²

GM Canada had publicly confirmed the broader tentative agreements on Aug. 22, saying they covered roughly 4,600 represented employees including CAMI and included improvements in wages, benefits and job security. That GM statement said the agreements were subject to ratification but did not publish the detailed CAMI commitment language.²

Reuters independently reported the worker approval on Aug. 30 and quoted GM Canada president Jack Uppal describing the new agreements as improving wages, benefits and job security while helping sustain Canadian auto jobs.⁴ Reuters' detailed CAMI terms, however, also trace to Unifor's public bargaining materials rather than to a separately published GM version of the CAMI commitment letter.⁴

The no-close language is still qualified

The union's bargaining report says GM stated it had no intent to close or sell CAMI during the three-year agreement term, which the report says runs through Sept. 19, 2029.³ The same summary includes an important caveat: it says conditions could arise that make compliance with that stated intent impractical, in which case GM would discuss the impact with Unifor.³

That is why ratification should not be read as an unconditional guarantee that CAMI will remain open or unsold through 2029. The exact no-close/no-sale wording remains a Unifor-published account of negotiated terms in the public record reviewed for this update, not a separately published GM commitment letter.³²

The same caution applies to possible defense work. Unifor says CAMI would receive first consideration for potential GM Defense work if the Government of Canada awards an applicable Canadian Armed Forces contract to GM.¹³ The reviewed sources do not establish that such a contract has been awarded to GM or that defense production has been allocated to CAMI.¹³⁴²

CAMI remains a post-BrightDrop manufacturing question

GM ended BrightDrop electric-delivery-van production at CAMI in October 2025 after vehicle production had been suspended since May. At the time, GM said it would assess future opportunities for the plant.⁵

The ratified labor package now provides more certainty about the agreement governing CAMI workers and gives eligible laid-off members a longer income-maintenance bridge.¹ It does not, on the current public evidence reviewed for this update, establish a replacement vehicle program, a production restart, a restart date or a GM Defense allocation.¹³⁴²⁵

The next material manufacturing development is therefore not another ratification detail. It is a product allocation, restart, capital program, defense award tied to actual CAMI work, or another concrete change in the plant's operating future.
