HERE-SBD Says U.S. Added 31,600 Public EV Charge Points in a Year — Total Charging Power Rose 47%

Its 2026 index says those additions represent 13% of the country's total charge points, while aggregate installed charging power climbed from 14.1 GW to 20.7 GW.

HERE Technologies and SBD Automotive say the U.S. added 31,600 public EV charge points during the June 2025-to-June 2026 period covered by their latest EV Index. The companies say those additions represent 13% of the country's total charge points.1 Over the same measurement window, the index says total installed public charging power rose 47%, from 14.1 gigawatts to 20.7 GW.1

The two figures describe different dimensions of the charging buildout. A charge-point total says how many points were added to HERE-SBD's measured network, while the aggregate-power figure measures the total charging power represented in that dataset. The public release does not provide enough detail to determine how much of the 47% increase came from newly installed higher-power equipment, upgrades, operator mix, data-source changes or another factor.1

That also means the 47% figure is not evidence that an average charging session became 47% faster. Aggregate installed power does not by itself establish real-world session speed, uptime, utilization, queueing or driver wait times. HERE-SBD's result is an aggregate installed-power measure, not a direct measurement of the experience at any particular charger.1

The latest edition reports 5,400 fewer additions

HERE-SBD's 2025 EV Index reported 37,000 new U.S. public charge points over its June 2024-to-June 2025 measurement window and explicitly described that figure as a 19% increase.2 The 2026 edition reports 31,600 additions over the following June-to-June window.1

Comparing the two published editions, the newer report contains 5,400 fewer charge-point additions. That is an Autonomous News calculation from the two releases, not a figure independently produced from raw charging-network data.12

The percentage figures in the two releases should not be compared as if they are the same measurement. The 2025 release explicitly calls 37,000 additions a 19% increase, while the 2026 release says 31,600 additions represent 13% of the country's total charge points. The current release does not state that annual charge-point growth was 13%, so the reviewed sources do not support saying growth fell from 19% to 13%.12

There is another reason to keep the comparison narrow: HERE's underlying charge-point data are proprietary. Both releases describe June-to-June measurement windows and combine HERE charge-point data with government and automotive data, but the public materials do not establish that every source feed, inclusion rule, duplicate treatment or data-cleaning method remained identical between editions.12 The defensible comparison is therefore between the published addition counts, not a reconstructed national growth rate.

A separate dataset also shows continued expansion

Alliance for Automotive Innovation separately reported 242,354 publicly available U.S. charging outlets at the end of the first quarter of 2026 and said 9,212 new public chargers were added during that quarter.3 Those figures provide independent directional context that the public charging network was still expanding, but they are not a direct validation of HERE-SBD's 31,600 figure because the Alliance data cover a different period and use a different data pipeline.13

HERE and SBD released the fourth annual EV Index on September 9. Its infrastructure analysis covers all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using HERE proprietary charge-point data together with government and automotive data sources.1 The useful takeaway from this edition is the contrast between 31,600 added charge points and a 47% increase in aggregate installed charging power—with each figure kept inside the scope of the proprietary index that produced it.1
