EV AM Radio: Current U.S. Manufacturer Evidence and Federal Mandate Status

Some current EVs explicitly include a native AM receiver. For others, current manufacturer pages establish FM, HD Radio, satellite radio or internet-radio apps without directly answering whether native AM is present.

This page is a source-versioned manufacturer-evidence matrix. It records what current first-party U.S. sources confirm and what they leave unresolved; it does not turn an omitted specification into a no and does not claim every U.S.-market EV has already been resolved.

That distinction matters after the U.S. House passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2025, H.R. 979, on September 15, 2026. As of the latest September 21 check, the official GovInfo record still says the Senate received the bill, read it twice and placed it on the calendar on September 16.¹

That is not an already-effective nationwide AM-radio mandate. The bill is still pending. Current vehicle equipment therefore still has to be checked model by model from current manufacturer sources.

This reference uses three evidence states:

• Confirmed: the checked current first-party source explicitly lists AM.
• Not established: the checked first-party source does not support a reliable yes/no AM answer.
• None: reserved for an exact current first-party source that explicitly says AM is not available. This matrix does not assign none based on silence.

A vehicle missing from this table should not be interpreted as lacking AM. Likewise, a not established row is an unresolved source state rather than a negative equipment claim.

What H.R. 979 requires today

As of September 21, 2026, H.R. 979 is pending in the Senate, not enacted law. GovInfo lists the latest action as Received; read twice and placed on the calendar on September 16.¹

The current bill text is still useful for understanding what Congress is proposing:

• it defines receive as receiving a broadcast signal via over-the-air transmission;²²
• it defines standard equipment as equipment installed as originally manufactured and provided without a separate fee beyond the vehicle's base price;²²
• if enacted, the Secretary of Transportation would have one year after enactment to issue a rule requiring AM-reception equipment as standard equipment in covered new passenger vehicles;²²
• the general rule effective date would be no more than two years after the rule is issued, with a different minimum timing provision for certain manufacturers that made no more than 40,000 U.S.-sale passenger vehicles in 2022;²²
• the bill also contains a proposed interim period after enactment and before the rule's effective date in which covered new vehicles without AM reception would need purchaser disclosure, and manufacturers could not impose an additional separate AM-access charge during that period.²²

So House passage did not instantly add AM hardware to current EVs, and it did not eliminate the need to verify today's vehicle equipment.

Native AM is not the same as TuneIn, satellite radio or generic radio

The current bill text defines receipt around an over-the-air broadcast signal.²² That is why this matrix keeps terrestrial AM separate from internet radio and other audio services.

Tesla's current Model 3 and Model Y manuals, for example, list TuneIn among supported media apps and explicitly mention FM if equipped, but the checked current North American pages do not establish native AM.^9101112 Rivian's current U.S. Connect+ page likewise lists SiriusXM and TuneIn among streaming apps, but that current service page does not establish native AM/FM hardware.²¹

A streaming AM station may let a driver hear the same programming when data service is available. It is still a different equipment state from a native over-the-air AM receiver, which is the field tracked here.

Why exact model and source scope matters

Current first-party pages already produce materially different evidence states:

• Ford explicitly lists AM/FM Stereo on the 2026 Mustang Mach-E Select.²
• Hyundai explicitly lists AM/FM/HD Radio on the checked 2026 regular IONIQ 5, IONIQ 5 N and IONIQ 9 scopes.³⁵⁴
• Kia explicitly lists AM/FM/HD Radio across the five displayed 2026 EV9 trims.⁶
• Genesis explicitly lists AM/FM/HD Radio on the checked 2026 Electrified GV70 build surface.⁷
• Nissan explicitly lists AM/FM across all three displayed 2026 LEAF trims.⁸
• current Honda, Subaru, GM, Volkswagen, Tesla, Rivian, Lucid and Polestar sources checked here leave native AM unresolved in at least the scope shown above.^{9101112131415161718192021}

That is enough to reject shortcuts such as EVs do not have AM radio, all current EVs have AM, or a permanent brand-level yes/no list.

How to interpret not established

Not established is deliberately different from no.

If a current OEM page lists FM, HD Radio, satellite radio or streaming apps but says nothing direct about AM, this reference does not infer that AM is absent. A later owner manual, order guide or product-spec source may resolve the row.

That rule is why the current Honda Prologue, Subaru Solterra, Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC Sierra EV, Volkswagen ID.4 and Rivian service-scope rows remain unresolved even though their manufacturer pages provide substantial infotainment detail.^161718192021

It is better to leave a field unknown than to turn a third-party compatibility list or an OEM omission into a false negative.

Next verification targets

The matrix now covers 17 current source scopes, but unresolved and uncovered models should be improved only when better first-party evidence is available. High-value next checks include:

• current Ford F-150 Lightning exact model-year scope;
• additional Chevrolet/GMC/Cadillac EVs beyond the current source-bound rows above;
• exact Rivian R1T/R1S current-generation hardware documentation rather than broad connectivity-service scope;
• BMW/MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Audi current EVs;
• Toyota/Lexus current EVs;
• exact current Tesla evidence if Tesla publishes a first-party AM availability/absence statement beyond the source-boundary evidence above.

A new row should be added only when a current U.S. manufacturer product/spec page, build surface, owner manual or support document establishes a useful source state.

When this page will be rechecked

This reference should be reverified when:

• an automaker publishes a new U.S. model year or trim guide;
• infotainment hardware or software changes radio availability;
• an OEM reverses an AM-radio decision;
• H.R. 979 or successor legislation changes status in the Senate or reaches the President;
• DOT/NHTSA begins implementation or rulemaking after enactment;
• a cited page is replaced or materially revised.

The forced review date is September 28, 2026, but federal legislative action or an OEM media-system change should trigger an earlier check.
