A federal investigation into General Motors’ eBoost braking system has expanded from 3,322 model-year 2023 Cadillac Lyriqs to an estimated 1,164,820 vehicles. That is roughly a 351-fold increase in the investigation’s scope, based on the populations listed in NHTSA’s original Preliminary Evaluation and its new Engineering Analysis.12
The increase does not mean NHTSA has found 1.16 million defective vehicles, and it does not mean 1.16 million EVs are affected. The current population includes both electric and gasoline models. What changed is the breadth of the federal inquiry — and, more importantly, the failure pattern NHTSA says it still needs to explain.13
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened Engineering Analysis EA26006 on Aug. 21, escalating the Preliminary Evaluation it began in April 2024. ODI says some reports received since the earlier probe allege an immediate loss of brake assist while the vehicle is still moving or braking. The agency says those reports are inconsistent with the failure sequence GM previously described to investigators.1
NHTSA says the new reports do not follow GM’s described sequence
GM’s explanation, as summarized by ODI, centers on a spindle inside the eBoost system that can fracture. Under the sequence GM described, anti-lock braking, stability control and traction control remain functional until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. After the stop, brake assist and those functions can be lost, warning indicators appear, and vehicle speed can be limited.1
ODI says some newer reports describe something different: brake assist allegedly disappears immediately while a driver is actively slowing the vehicle. NHTSA says a sudden loss of assist during braking could extend braking distance and increase crash or injury risk, and that the discrepancy warrants further analysis.1
That distinction is central to the escalation. It does not prove the newer complaints are all caused by eBoost, nor does it establish a single root cause. It means the regulator says the complaint pattern is not fully accounted for by the failure behavior GM previously described.1
The probe started with one Lyriq model year
ODI opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24011 on April 11, 2024, covering 3,322 model-year 2023 Lyriqs after field reports alleged loss of brake boost assist, a hard brake pedal and a “Brake System Failure” warning.2
At the time, GM told NHTSA that an internal eBoost spindle could fracture during an ABS event. GM also reported that it had introduced a material change in production in May 2023 and developed an over-the-air startup diagnostic cycle for the brake booster. NHTSA specifically noted that the software action was not conducted as a recall.2
EA26006 now reaches across the vehicles ODI identifies as sharing the eBoost system. For EV buyers and owners, the list includes the Cadillac Lyriq, Optiq and Celestiq; Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV; Cruise Origin; Honda Prologue; and Acura ZDX. The overall 1.164-million population also includes gasoline vehicles such as the Chevrolet Colorado and Traverse, GMC Canyon and Acadia, and Buick Enclave and Envision.1
The Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX are listed by ODI as peer vehicles built by GM with the same system.1
745 reports are in the file — but they are not 745 proven defects
NHTSA’s opening resume lists 745 incidents after manufacturer duplicates are removed, including 22 reports in the combined “crashes/fires” category, five injury incidents involving six injuries, and no reported fatalities.1
Those numbers describe reports gathered in an open investigation. They do not establish that eBoost caused every incident, crash/fire report or injury. Likewise, the 1,164,820 figure is the estimated population NHTSA is examining, not a count of vehicles the agency has determined are defective.1
An Engineering Analysis is one of NHTSA’s formal defect-investigation stages and is used for a more detailed examination when further analysis is warranted. Opening one is not, by itself, a defect finding for every covered vehicle or a recall order.3
GM, for its part, told TechCrunch that it investigated the reports and concluded the alleged condition does not present an unreasonable safety risk. The company also said it will continue cooperating with NHTSA. That is GM’s position; EA26006 remains open while ODI conducts further analysis.41
A separate Lyriq brake recall is a different documented issue
There is also a 2024 safety recall involving braking on certain 2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq AWD vehicles. Based on the two public records, the documented failure conditions are different: GM’s recall bulletin says overly sensitive ABS activation during certain low-speed braking events can release braking pressure and reduce stopping performance, while PE24011/EA26006 concern alleged eBoost brake-assist failures and the failure sequence ODI is still investigating.125
That recall should not be treated as proof that the current eBoost investigation has already been fixed — or as proof that the two issues have no technical overlap. The public records describe different failure conditions, while EA26006 is still examining the character and scope of the eBoost complaints.125
The unresolved question is now narrower and more consequential than the headline population number: whether ODI can identify a failure mechanism and affected scope that explain why some reported brake-assist losses occur during braking rather than after the stop sequence GM described.1
