NOVONIX Says Lead Customer’s Graphite Sample Met 12 of 14 Specs — H2 2027 Sales Still Depend on Qualification

NOVONIX says its lead customer’s testing of an initial mass-production qualification sample of synthetic graphite met 12 of 14 specification parameters. Full qualification is still incomplete, and the company continues to expect mass-production sales to that customer in the second half of 2027 only if the qualification process is successfully completed.¹²

The September 9 disclosure adds something NOVONIX’s earlier updates did not have: customer-side test feedback on the C-sample.¹³² NOVONIX said one of the two unmet parameters was within approximately 1% of the customer’s requirement, while the other was evaluated on a pass/fail basis.¹

NOVONIX also said its own internal testing had indicated that the material met all required specifications. The company says it has now identified actions intended to address the two remaining parameters, but the September 9 release does not say whether the next step will be a new C-sample, targeted retesting or another qualification stage.¹

The lead customer was previously identified as Panasonic

NOVONIX’s September 9 release refers only to its lead customer; it does not name the counterparty in that release.¹ But the company’s June 11 SEC-filed disclosure identified Panasonic Energy as its lead customer and said NOVONIX had delivered Panasonic the mass-production qualification C-sample. That June update said NOVONIX’s internal testing indicated the sample met Panasonic’s specifications, subject to formal validation by Panasonic.³

NOVONIX’s September 1 half-year filing again identified Panasonic as the C-sample recipient and reaffirmed the company’s expectation for mass production for Panasonic in the second half of 2027, subject to successful completion of qualification.²

That history supports describing the September result as feedback from a lead customer previously identified by NOVONIX as Panasonic Energy.¹³² It does not make the September 9 result a Panasonic announcement or independent Panasonic confirmation of the 12-of-14 measurement.¹⁴

Panasonic separately confirms the commercial relationship. Its current sustainability material says it has a long-term synthetic-graphite supply agreement with NOVONIX and that the companies have conducted joint development since 2025 for supply from NOVONIX’s Tennessee factory to Panasonic’s North American factories.⁴ Panasonic’s original 2024 agreement announcement said the synthetic graphite was intended for EV-battery manufacturing in the United States.⁵

Customer validation is the important checkpoint

The distinction between NOVONIX’s internal result and the customer’s result is the useful part of this update. In June, NOVONIX said its own testing indicated the C-sample met Panasonic’s specifications, but the same disclosure made clear that formal customer validation was still required.³ The September update now provides NOVONIX’s account of that customer testing: 12 parameters met, two still unresolved.¹

That is neither final approval nor a rejection; NOVONIX’s September 9 disclosure describes qualification as ongoing.¹ The company says it has identified actions for the remaining parameters and continues to state an expectation for mass-production sales to the lead customer in H2 2027.¹² The timing remains explicitly conditional on successful qualification.¹²
