Elon Musk says the Cybercab motor uses no rare-earth metals, tying Tesla’s previously announced next-generation motor direction to Cybercab.123 Musk also said the motor maintains the same range, but his Sept. 4 post did not identify the comparison vehicle, motor, configuration or test method behind that statement.123
That is a Tesla executive’s claim about the motor, not an independently verified materials finding. The evidence reviewed for this story does not include a teardown, materials assay or supplier disclosure establishing Cybercab’s exact motor or magnet chemistry.123
Tesla was talking about this motor direction in 2023
The no-rare-earth target itself is not new. Tesla’s March 1, 2023 Investor Day centered in part on its next-generation vehicle platform, and contemporaneous TeslaNorth coverage of the public presentation recorded Tesla saying its next-generation permanent-magnet drive unit would contain no rare-earth materials.45
Musk’s new statement matters because it attaches that previously announced engineering direction to Cybercab rather than leaving it as a future platform goal.15 Tesla’s current Cybercab support page separately identifies Cybercab as an addition to its Robotaxi fleet and says Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin, Texas.6 That establishes current vehicle-service context; it does not independently establish anything about the motor’s material composition.
The supply-chain case is bigger than Tesla
Rare-earth magnets sit in one of the most geographically concentrated critical-mineral supply chains. The International Energy Agency says China accounted for 60% of global mined production of magnet rare earths, 91% of global refined output and 94% of sintered permanent-magnet production in 2024.7
That concentration has already had automotive consequences. The IEA says China’s April 2025 rare-earth export controls caused some automakers in the United States, Europe and elsewhere to reduce utilization or temporarily stop production because of difficulties obtaining magnets.7
If Musk’s Cybercab claim is accurate and the design proves scalable, avoiding rare-earth materials in the motor would remove one highly concentrated material input from that drive-unit design.17 It would not, by itself, establish a China-free Cybercab supply chain or protection from every other concentrated component or material dependency.
What Musk’s post does not establish
The reviewed sources do not identify Cybercab’s exact magnet chemistry or motor topology.123 They also do not establish a Tesla-specific cost saving, margin benefit, supplier mix, production volume, manufacturing yield or line rate for the no-rare-earth motor.123
The same limitation applies to wider deployment. Musk’s statement concerns “the Cybercab motor”; the reviewed evidence does not establish that Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, Semi or every future Tesla will use the same design.123
And while Musk says range is maintained, the comparison baseline remains undefined.123 Without that baseline and independent technical data, the statement cannot support a quantified range or efficiency improvement. What the current evidence supports is narrower: Tesla publicly targeted a no-rare-earth next-generation motor in 2023, and Musk is now saying that design direction is present in Cybercab.15
