Polestar Just Previewed Its Next 2 and 7 — It Says U.S. Sales From Model Year 2027 Aren't Authorized

Formula 2030 previews design attributes for a new Polestar 2 planned for 2027 and the forthcoming Polestar 7, but calendar-year launch timing is not the same as model year.

Polestar has given its next product cycle a new design preview. On Sept. 7, the company confirmed its Formula 2030 concept and said the show car previews design attributes that will appear on the new Polestar 2 and the forthcoming Polestar 7. Polestar says the new Polestar 2 is planned for launch in 2027.1

For U.S. buyers, that reveal lands against a separate regulatory timeline. Polestar's Sept. 3 financial disclosure says the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security did not grant the authorization the company sought to sell vehicles in the United States from model year 2027 onward under the current Connected Vehicles Rule.2

Those two uses of 2027 are not interchangeable. A vehicle planned to launch in calendar 2027 is not automatically a model-year 2027 vehicle. Polestar has not identified the next Polestar 2's model year in the Formula 2030 release, so the current evidence does not establish that the 2027-launch car itself falls inside the model-year cutoff described in the company's U.S. disclosure.12

What Formula 2030 actually adds

The next-model timing was already public. In February, Polestar said a completely new Polestar 2 successor was planned for early 2027 and the Polestar 7 for 2028.3 The Sept. 7 development is that Polestar has now explicitly tied Formula 2030's design attributes to both future vehicles.1

Polestar says Formula 2030 will first be shown to investors, retailers and selected customers at its Gothenburg headquarters before a global debut later in 2026.1 The release describes the concept as a design preview; it does not announce U.S. pricing, order timing or availability for either future model.1

That makes the U.S. question more complicated than treating a 2027 launch date as proof the car falls under the MY2027 restriction. Polestar's latest company statement is about model-year 2027-and-later vehicles, while Formula 2030 gives only a calendar-year launch plan for the new Polestar 2.12

Why the U.S. sales path is still constrained

The Commerce Department's Connected Vehicles final rule phases in relevant restrictions beginning with model year 2027 and provides a specific-authorization process for transactions that would otherwise be prohibited.4 The public rule explains that framework, but it does not disclose the confidential reasoning behind Polestar's individual authorization outcome.4

Polestar says it expects to keep selling previous-model-year vehicles from U.S. inventory and then cease new-vehicle sales, while continuing customer support, service-network access, warranties and other product commitments.2 That plan was already part of the U.S. restructuring covered in our Sept. 3 report on Polestar's financial impact.

The current Formula 2030 release does not change that stated U.S. posture.12 In the Polestar and BIS public sources reviewed Sept. 7, the newsroom found no post-denial U.S.-specific launch or order authorization for the next Polestar 2 or Polestar 7.124 That is a statement about the reviewed public record now, not a claim that either model can never be sold in the United States.

Our Aug. 25 explainer on Polestar's U.S. authorization process provides the regulatory background without changing the narrower conclusion here: Formula 2030 is a product preview, not a model-specific U.S. sales authorization.12

For now, Formula 2030 establishes Polestar's stated design direction for its next models.1 It does not, by itself, establish whether or when those specific cars will have a lawful U.S. sales path.124
