Schneider’s New EV Charger Includes Its Load-Management Sensors. Tesla’s Dynamic Power Management Requires a Separate $210 Meter.

Schneider says its hardwired SmartAmp models need no separate external energy monitor; UL 3141 can simplify load calculations where local authorities accept it, but managed charging does not guarantee every home can skip a panel or service upgrade.

Schneider Electric’s new Schneider Charge home EV charger puts the current-transformer sensors needed for its SmartAmp load-management system in the box. Tesla’s comparable Dynamic Power Management feature for Wall Connector requires a separate Tesla-approved meter; Tesla’s Remote Meter is currently listed at $210 and out of stock.12

Schneider launched Charge in the U.S. and Canada on Aug. 25. The two current hardwired North American models use either J3400/NACS or J1772 connectors and can deliver up to 48 amps, or 11.5 kW.34

That packaging difference matters most in homes where adding a Level 2 charger runs into the electrical service or panel’s available capacity. Dynamic load management can reduce charging power when the rest of the home is drawing heavily, then raise it again as capacity becomes available.1

Schneider includes the load sensors

SmartAmp monitors household electrical load and adjusts the EV’s charging rate in real time. The system uses current transformers, or CTs — clamp-style sensors installed around conductors to measure electrical load. Schneider says the CTs are included with compatible hardwired Charge models and that SmartAmp does not need a separate external energy-monitoring device.1

The sensors still have to be installed and the system commissioned by a licensed electrician or other qualified professional. Schneider also says the load-management function continues operating if the home’s Wi-Fi connection goes down.1

Tesla’s Dynamic Power Management performs the same basic job: it monitors available panel capacity and changes Wall Connector’s charging rate in real time. But Tesla says the feature requires a Tesla-approved power meter sold separately from Wall Connector. Its Remote Meter package is currently listed at $210 and includes the meter, two 200-amp CTs, a voltage cable, RS-485 harness, antenna and related hardware.2

Tesla’s support material distinguishes that dynamic approach from its Static Power Management feature, which simply sets a fixed maximum charging level based on the power available at installation. Dynamic Power Management instead varies charging as household demand changes, letting the Wall Connector use more capacity when the rest of the home is using less.2

That does not mean a Schneider installation is $210 cheaper. The two systems package their load-management hardware differently, and the research does not establish a clean current Schneider consumer price or directly comparable total installed costs. The narrower comparison is that Schneider includes the CT hardware SmartAmp needs, while Tesla’s dynamic system requires a separate meter package.12

It also means Schneider is not introducing dynamic load management as a new idea. Tesla already offers the same general real-time panel-load function. Schneider’s practical distinction here is how the monitoring hardware is packaged with the charger.12

Why UL 3141 matters

Schneider identifies Charge’s load-management system as UL 3141 certified and says that certification can simplify electrical load calculations where the local authority having jurisdiction, or AHJ, accepts the approach.41

UL describes a power control system as a system that electronically limits current or power to keep electrical equipment within defined limits and mitigate overload conditions. UL 3141 establishes safety requirements for those systems. UL’s current guidance also says the 2026 National Electrical Code moved power-control-system listing requirements into Article 130 and added UL 3141 as an applicable requirement for that article.5

For EV charging, the practical idea is straightforward: rather than treating the charger as if it will always draw its maximum power on top of every other household load, a listed control system can actively manage charging within configured electrical limits.5

That can make managed charging useful when a home has limited spare capacity. It is not, however, a blanket permission slip to skip an electrical upgrade.156

Schneider itself qualifies its product-page language with “where accepted by AHJ.” Schneider-owned installation provider Qmerit likewise describes managed load shedding as a potential panel-upgrade alternative in some installations, while cautioning that it is not appropriate for every site.46

Whether a homeowner can actually avoid a panel or service upgrade still depends on the home’s service capacity, panel configuration, other loads, local code adoption, the installer’s load calculation and the local AHJ’s acceptance of the design.156

So the important Schneider Charge spec is not just its 48-amp maximum. For an owner facing a capacity-constrained installation, the more consequential difference may be that the load-sensing hardware required for SmartAmp already comes with the compatible hardwired charger — while Tesla’s dynamic system currently adds a separate meter product to the installation.12
