Tesla Says First Cybertruck With 4680 Cells Containing Gulf Coast Refinery Lithium Has Been Built

The Sept. 4 company post ties Tesla's Texas lithium refinery to an identifiable Cybertruck build; its Q2 filing still listed lithium refining at 30 GWh and 'Early Ramp,' while the scale of vehicle use remains undisclosed.

Tesla says it has built the first Cybertruck with 4680 cells containing lithium from its Gulf Coast Lithium Refinery, putting the company’s Texas refinery into an identifiable vehicle build for the first time in the public progression documented by Tesla’s current filings.1234

The material-provenance claim comes from Tesla itself. Its public Cybertruck account posted the milestone on Sept. 4, 2026; the reviewed evidence does not independently assay the cells, trace the lithium or establish how much of the lithium in those cells came from Tesla’s refinery.1

That makes this a narrower development than a fleet-wide sourcing change, but a more concrete one than another refinery construction or capacity update. Tesla had already disclosed that the in-house Texas lithium refinery began operations in January 2026, and its Q4 2025 shareholder update said the facility had commenced pilot production.34

Tesla still listed lithium refining as “Early Ramp” in July

Tesla’s Q2 2026 update, filed with the SEC in July, listed Texas lithium refining at 30 GWh of installed annual capacity with a status of “Early Ramp.”2 The same update explicitly warned that installed capacity is not the same thing as current production rate and said early-ramp capacity can include expected capacity.2

Tesla also said in that Q2 update that it had made further progress ramping lithium refining and cathode-material production in Texas.2 The Sept. 4 Cybertruck post adds a downstream milestone to that earlier ramp disclosure: Tesla is now publicly saying refinery-linked lithium has reached 4680 cells in at least the first named Cybertruck build.12

That does not mean the refinery has moved out of early ramp, reached 30 GWh of actual output or become the source for every Cybertruck battery. Tesla has not disclosed a current refinery-throughput figure in the sources reviewed for this story.12

What one “first Cybertruck” does not establish

Tesla’s wording leaves the scale of the sourcing change open. The post does not say that every Cybertruck built after this one will use refinery-linked lithium, nor does it disclose what percentage of the lithium in the relevant 4680 cells came from the Gulf Coast facility.1

The location of the refinery also should not be confused with the origin of the raw material. Tesla’s sources reviewed here establish refining in Texas, but they do not establish that the lithium feedstock for this Cybertruck was mined in the United States.1234

The company likewise did not say the milestone vehicle had been delivered to a customer, and the reviewed sources do not connect the refinery milestone to a change in Cybertruck price, range, battery chemistry, margin or consumer tax-credit treatment.1

For now, the supportable change is specific: Tesla says its Gulf Coast refinery has progressed from startup and early-ramp disclosures to supplying lithium contained in the 4680 cells of a first Cybertruck build. The next meaningful evidence would be scale — regular vehicle use, refinery throughput or a broader sourcing disclosure — rather than the existence of the refinery itself.1234
