Tesla is currently hiring a Sr. Quality Engineer, Roadster Battery in Fremont, and the job description gets unusually specific about the manufacturing-quality work attached to the role. Tesla lists product and process specifications, design and process FMEAs, control plans, in-process inspection criteria, quality metrics, supplier non-conformance, containment and corrective-action work among the responsibilities.1
Tesla says the position is intended to contribute to the development and launch of the Roadster vehicle battery and to support process and product quality.1 That makes the listing a concrete Roadster manufacturing signal — but a narrow one. It establishes what Tesla wants the role to do, not that those manufacturing systems are already operating at production scale.
The distinction matters because job descriptions can easily be read as schedule clues when they are really staffing documents.
Tesla has another Roadster battery-manufacturing role live
Tesla also currently lists a separate Manufacturing Engineer, Roadster position in Fremont. That job is focused on battery-manufacturing equipment, with responsibilities that run from early concept development through equipment launch, prototype validation and production-scale processes.2
The live manufacturing-engineer listing also says the Roadster product architecture is in “early development stages.”2 That wording is notable, but it should not be treated as a fresh Aug. 29 status declaration for the entire vehicle program. The evidence establishes that the phrase remains in Tesla’s current job description; it does not establish when that sentence was written or last updated.
Put together, the two live requisitions support a limited inference: Tesla is staffing multiple Roadster battery-manufacturing functions, with one role centered on manufacturing equipment and another centered on quality systems.12 They do not establish how large the Roadster team is, whether either opening represents net-new headcount, or how far the underlying vehicle program has progressed.
What the quality job does — and does not — tell us
The quality-engineer listing is useful because it names the kinds of controls Tesla expects the role to work on. FMEAs, control plans, inspection criteria, supplier containment and root-cause work sit around the process of defining, monitoring and correcting manufacturing quality.1 That is more informative than a generic engineering opening because it identifies specific functions Tesla wants covered around the Roadster battery.
But the hiring signal stops there. Neither current Tesla listing establishes that Roadster production has started, that the design or battery specifications are frozen, that a production ramp is underway, or that a reveal or customer deliveries are imminent.12
For now, the defensible takeaway is simpler: Tesla has active Roadster-specific recruiting for both battery-manufacturing equipment and battery-quality work. The job descriptions provide a clearer look at the functions being staffed than they do at the Roadster’s timetable.
