PG&E's new GM Smart Charge Bundle is narrower than the charger headline alone suggests. PG&E's dedicated program page says participants must have residential electric service, live in a single-family home or detached residence, have an exact eligible GM EV, and keep qualifying OnStar service with location services enabled.1
For customers who clear those gates, PG&E and GM Energy say the bundle lets qualifying buyers or lessees select a GM Energy PowerShift or PowerUp 2 charger at no additional hardware cost, with a stated hardware value of up to $1,999. The program also offers a $15 monthly PG&E bill credit when its ongoing requirements are met.21 The current primary sources checked for this story do not establish that installation labor, electrical work or a panel upgrade is included.21
The hardware, $15 credit and 'up to $50' are three different benefits
The Sept. 23 launch announcement combines several pieces of value, but they do not work the same way.2
| Benefit | What the current source says | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Charger hardware | PowerShift or PowerUp 2 at no additional hardware cost, stated value up to $1,999 | This does not establish free installation or electrical work. |
| Monthly credit | $15 PG&E bill credit for qualifying participation | The credit has continuing monthly requirements. |
| Managed-charging savings | PG&E and GM say participants may save up to an additional $50 per month by shifting charging | This is potential savings, not a guaranteed second $50 credit. |
That last distinction matters. The launch release describes the extra $50 as potential savings from managed charging, not as a fixed payment on top of the $15 bill credit.2
PG&E lists exact model years, not every GM EV
PG&E's current program page lists the following eligible vehicles:1
- 2024–2027: Chevrolet Silverado EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Cadillac LYRIQ and GMC Sierra Denali EV
- 2025–2027: Cadillac CELESTIQ, Cadillac Escalade IQ/IQL, Cadillac OPTIQ and GMC Sierra EV
- 2026–2027: Cadillac VISTIQ and GMC HUMMER EV
- 2027 and newer: Chevrolet Bolt EV
That list is a current program snapshot, not a blanket all GM EVs rule. A buyer with a different model year should check the live PG&E eligibility page rather than assume that a nearby year or related GM EV qualifies.
The bundle is also tied to participating Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac dealerships. PG&E and GM say the hardware selection can be integrated into a qualifying vehicle purchase or lease, and PG&E links customers to a GM Energy enrollment route.21
The $15 monthly credit has continuing conditions
Getting into the program is not the end of the eligibility test. To receive the $15 credit in a given month, PG&E says the participant must keep qualifying OnStar service with location services enabled, maintain active PG&E electric service and complete at least one home charging session during that month.1
PG&E also says a customer cannot enroll in this program if already enrolled in another PG&E demand-response or EV managed-charging program.1 That is a specific PG&E overlap restriction; it should not be generalized into a rule about every CCA, rebate or other EV program.
The managed-charging system uses software from WeaveGrid to schedule charging for lower-cost or lower-demand periods, according to the launch announcement. PG&E and GM say customers can override a managed charging session when they need to charge on their own schedule.2 For how vehicle, charger and utility schedules can interact, see ATC's scheduled charging and departure preconditioning guide.
Installation and home-backup readiness are separate questions
The phrase to keep intact is no additional hardware cost. Neither of the checked current primary sources establishes that the bundle pays for installation labor, electrical upgrades or other work that may be needed to put the charger into service.21
The same caution applies to PowerShift's bidirectional capability. PG&E and GM describe PowerShift as equipment that can be paired with other GM Energy hardware and a compatible EV for bidirectional home backup, but choosing PowerShift through this bundle does not by itself establish that a particular home is ready for vehicle-to-home backup.2
The checked primary sources also do not establish an exact program closing date, a participant cap or a universal post-delivery enrollment window.21 Those terms may matter as the program fills or changes, so the live PG&E eligibility page is the controlling source for the current customer-facing requirements.
